GPT-5 is here. What you need to know.

The latest and greatest AI from OpenAI. Initial reactions and what this means for you.

GPT-5 is here. What you need to know.

Here's what you need to know.

Don't think of GPT-5 as an AI model. Think of it as a product. Is OpenAI a product company now?

There are multiple models to what they call GPT-5. And there is a "router" that reads your message first and decides which of the models should write a reply for you.

Core Innovation: The Real-Time Router GPT-5 is a unified system with a smart, efficient model that answers most questions, a deeper reasoning model (GPT-5 thinking) for harder problems, and a real-time router that decides which to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and your explicit intent.

And the router broke down soon after the release lol. This is part of the reason for all the mixed feelings people have been expressing online since the release.

Thinking model's rate limits were low (200 messages per week), but they've increased it to 3000 per week. (not official yet last I checked)

The Two Main Models:

  1. gpt-5-main: As the successor to GPT-4o, gpt-5-main takes care of most everyday questions. It's designed to be the default model for tasks that don't need intensive reasoning
  2. gpt-5-thinking: For more complex problems, the system activates gpt-5-thinking. This model (which replaces OpenAI o3) is built for deeper reasoning on difficult, multi-variable questions

API Structure: GPT-5 in the API is simpler: it's available as three models: regular, mini and nano (which can each be run at one of four reasoning levels: minimal, low, medium or high)

For the amount of hype OpenAI generated around GPT-5, the reactions are mixed, mostly underwhelming.

Oh, and did I mention the outcry of people who befriended (?) GPT-4o and have been missing it and crying (for real) about it on reddit?

OpenAI is listening and reacting to all the feedback, so

if you want GPT-4o back, here's how:

Flip this switch in settings
Select it under "Legacy models" (now available under Plus accounts too, initially only Pro)

Which model should I use and for what?

Test out the default (it should auto-escalate to a thinking model) and if you're not ok with the results, switch to a thinking model. This should work for most people in most cases.

BUT under thing launched this week - and it IS mind-blowing

Google Genie 3 is... well... an early version of a holodeck from star trek?

Just watch the demo:

Have you tried GPT-5? What do you think?
